PLA vs Bagasse vs Bamboo
The three workhorses of compostable food service. Each shines in different applications — pick wrong and you get soggy plates or melted cups. Here's the quick reference.
PLA — Polylactic Acid
Made from fermented plant sugars (typically corn). It's the clear plastic-feeling material used in transparent cold cups, lids, and deli containers. Looks and behaves like petroleum plastic but composts in commercial facilities.
- Best for: Cold beverages, salad bowls, deli containers, portion cups
- Avoid: Hot liquids above 110°F — PLA softens and deforms
- Brands: Fabri-Kal Greenware, Eco-Products GreenStripe
Bagasse — Sugarcane Fiber
The fibrous byproduct of sugarcane juice extraction. Strong, rigid, and naturally heat-resistant up to ~220°F. Looks like off-white pulp paper. Great for plates, trays, and clamshells.
- Best for: Hot food plates, take-out clamshells, catering trays, microwave-safe to ~220°F
- Avoid: Liquid-only applications (it'll absorb over time) — fine for typical meals
- Brands: Eco-Products Vanguard, Forever Free Bagasse
Bamboo Paper
Fast-growing bamboo pulp formed into hot-resistant paper. Excellent insulation properties — keeps drinks hot or cold without sweating. Slight warm-tan color.
- Best for: Hot coffee cups, soup bowls, sip-lid cups, any insulated application
- Avoid: Truly transparent applications — bamboo is opaque
- Brands: Forever Free Bamboo
