PLA vs Bagasse vs Bamboo

The three workhorses of compostable food service. Each shines in different applications — pick wrong and you get soggy plates or melted cups. Here's the quick reference.

PLA — Polylactic Acid

Made from fermented plant sugars (typically corn). It's the clear plastic-feeling material used in transparent cold cups, lids, and deli containers. Looks and behaves like petroleum plastic but composts in commercial facilities.

Bagasse — Sugarcane Fiber

The fibrous byproduct of sugarcane juice extraction. Strong, rigid, and naturally heat-resistant up to ~220°F. Looks like off-white pulp paper. Great for plates, trays, and clamshells.

Bamboo Paper

Fast-growing bamboo pulp formed into hot-resistant paper. Excellent insulation properties — keeps drinks hot or cold without sweating. Slight warm-tan color.
